Ambassador Hmway Hmway Khyne Participates in the 177th Session of the FAO Council
Ambassador Hmway Hmway Khyne, Permanent Representative of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar to FAO, participated in the 177th Session of the FAO Council, from 8 to 11 April 2025 at FAO Headquarters in Rome. The Council gathered to address pressing global challenges in food security, agricultural resilience, and emergency interventions, particularly in response to natural and conflict-driven crises.
In his opening address, FAO Director-General Dr. QU Dongyu emphasized the importance of Member-driven cooperation, reaffirming the Organization’s commitment to the Four Betters – Better Production, Better Nutrition, a Better Environment, and a Better Life – under the Strategic Framework 2022–31. He underlined the need for strengthened investment and support for countries facing complex emergencies, such as Myanmar.
The Council devoted particular attention to the situation in Myanmar following the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake in March 2025. Participants acknowledged FAO’s emergency response, which aims to reach over 50,000 disaster-affected farming families with livelihood support, including cash transfers, seeds, and agricultural tools ahead of the monsoon planting season. Together with the World Food Programme, FAO is also conducting joint assessments to evaluate impacts on food production, availability, and irrigation systems, particularly in the central dry zone.
In support of Myanmar’s recovery, the Council welcomed and endorsed a proposal put forward by India, requesting FAO Management to prepare a comprehensive information note. The note will include detailed data and analysis on the earthquake’s impact in Myanmar, along with an overview of current and planned FAO interventions under its mandate.
In her statement delivered to the Council, Ambassador Hmway Hmway Khyne reaffirmed Myanmar’s strong commitment to sustainable agricultural development, food security, and international cooperation. She highlighted the country’s vulnerability to natural disasters, the urgent need for agricultural rehabilitation, and the importance of building resilient rural livelihoods in alignment with FAO’s Four Betters and the Sustainable Development Goals. The Ambassador also expressed appreciation for FAO’s support and called for continued solidarity and technical partnerships to address Myanmar’s recovery needs.
Myanmar’s participation in the Council reaffirmed its commitment to multilateral cooperation and FAO’s strategic priorities, particularly in the areas of emergency response, food systems resilience, and sustainable rural development.
